Statement on conflict in Israel and Gaza

Nottingham Labour stands in solidarity with the innocent civilians of both Israel and Palestine. There is no justification for the loss of innocent lives. As this war and bloodshed continues, thousands of lives are being lost. This is wholly unacceptable.

We must all do our utmost to bring about togetherness, peace, protection of the innocent and vulnerable, and a rejection of hatred. Nottingham Labour will continue to be strong and vocal advocates for justice, human rights and international law in this conflict, and we condemn the use of violence against civilians including the indiscriminate bombardment and call for an immediate ceasefire.

International law must be adhered to at all times. Israel’s current response – cutting off food supplies, water and electricity from the people of Gaza – is collective punishment and a humanitarian disaster. The United Nations must be allowed to immediately provide safe corridors into Gaza, to allow vital lifesaving medical equipment, and humanitarian aid to reach those who need it, as has been called for by the international community. Hamas must release all hostages immediately. Hamas must be distinguished from ordinary Palestinian people.

We understand and feel the pain of our communities in Nottingham, especially the Muslim, Jewish and Christian communities, who the events in Israel and Palestine affect so profoundly. We want peace in Israel and Palestine and we want the people of Nottingham to continue to live together harmoniously too, as we have done so for many years. We will stand together with you to advocate for peace and protection of those who are most vulnerable. Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism and hatred of any kind have no place in our city. We will continue to proactively work for mutual respect, understanding and cohesion in Nottingham.

There will not be a just, and lasting peace until both Israelis and Palestinians enjoy security, dignity and human rights.
